Awards / Grants for Researching and Publishing Medical History

If you're a medical student, young surgeon, or humanities enthusiast interested in the history and humanism of medicine, there are many opportunities available. From research grants like the Walter Bean Award to essay contests and conferences, these programs provide financial support and a platform to showcase your work.

Research Grants

Walter Bean Award

  • Applications due 1 March
  • $1500 for medical students in the US or Canada
  • The proposal must address medical history or the use of literature and the arts to improve medical practice. While important, we are not seeking projects confined to medical ethics.

American College of Surgeons Travel Grant

  • $2000 stipend for research in American College of Surgeons Archive
  • applicants must: be a member of the American College of Surgeons, or become a member at the appropriate level if chosen as the award recipient

Michael E. DeBakey Fellowship at the National Library of Medicine

  • $10,000 award to use collections in the National Library of Medicine

Publication Awards

American Association for the History of Medicine Osler Award

  • Must be MD or DO student
  • Granted a physical medal, travel expenses to the meeting, and 2-year complimentary membership to the organization 

American College of Surgeons Young Surgeons Essay Contest

  • Entrees are invited from young surgeons who must be the first and primary author.
  • Young Surgeons are defined as:
    • Fellows 45 or younger
    • Associate Fellows 45 or younger
    • Resident members
    • Medical student members, who must be the first and primary author.
    • Fellows above 45 years of age may serve as additional or senior authors.
  • Authorship is restricted to no more than five individuals.
  • Essays may cover any aspect of surgical history, broadly conceived, but must represent original historical research.
  • Essays are limited to 5000 words, not including references/captions.
  • You may not win two years in a row. You may not submit the same entry more than two years in a row.
  • Presented certificate and publication in Journal of the American College of Surgeons (pending peer-review)

History of Medicine Days Conference

  • In early to mid-March, the University of Calgary hosts an in-person national History of Medicine Days conference (2-3 days) at which medical students and humanities students from across Canada present posters and oral presentations on their research in the history of medicine. For students wishing to present at this conference, please submit abstracts for consideration. Abstracts are submitted in the first week of January.
  • Best paper and poster are recognized with awards

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest 

  • Open to medical and nursing school students
  • Focuses on mission of humanism in healthcare
  • Winners received $1000
  • Winning essays are published in Academic Medicine, on the Foundation’s Web site (www.humanism-in-medicine.org) and in their newsletter.
